Spine Centers of Excellence Program

Chronic low back pain is a common ailment affecting men and women of all ages. Thankfully, there are many non-surgical treatments that offer relief.

Medical studies show that most people with low back pain can improve their symptoms with rest, medication and therapy.

To help members explore all treatment options, Blue Cross of Idaho developed the Spine Centers of Excellence program. The specialist who are members of the Spine Centers of Excellence network are located throughout Idaho. They follow the latest evidence-based guidelines to help patients conservatively manage low back pain with non-surgical methods.

The goal of the Spine Centers of Excellence program is to ensure Blue Cross of Idaho members stay informed on the low back pain treatment options available. Research shows when patients remain informed of all treatment options and are knowledgeable about their decisions, they are more satisfied with the outcome.

Medical evidence shows that many people can manage low back pain with non-surgical methods. A conservative back pain management program can ease soreness and potentially prevent future injuries. In fact, 95 percent of patients with acute low back pain can recover without surgery.

Blue Cross of Idaho's Spine Centers of Excellence program takes a team approach to treat low back pain so you receive the most appropriate, comprehensive care. We can help participants schedule an initial assessment by a physiatrist (a doctor who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation to help reduce pain and restore function) to develop an individualized, comprehensive treatment plan. The plan may include pain management, physical therapy, appropriate imaging, and other support.

At the conclusion of a course of treatment, the participant and physiatrist can decide if they have adequately addressed the back pain issues, if there’s a need to continue therapy, or if they need to explore other treatment options. Blue Cross of Idaho may require participation in the Spine Centers of Excellence program prior to consideration of back surgery.
